Geography Location of Ta Lien Son
Tả Liên Sơn is located in Tà Lẻng commune, Tam Đường district, Lai Châu province, in the southwest of the Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range. It is the sixth-highest mountain in Vietnam, with an altitude of 2,996 meters. Tả Liên Mountain has the characteristics of a young mountain with steep slopes and a sharp peak. The mountain is famous for its diverse natural scenery, which is as beautiful as a fairy tale. The climate is relatively mild and cool all year round. The end of the year is the time when the temperature drops, and snow and ice can appear on the mountain.
The best time to trek to Ta Lien Son
The best time to trek Tả Liên Sơn is from September to May of the following year. This is because the weather during this period is dry and less rainy, making the trails clear and easy to navigate.
The beauty of Tả Liên Sơn changes with the seasons. From September to November, the mountain is covered in the golden color of ripe rice and maple leaves. From November to January, the cold air brings a sense of winter. The space with dense fog, floating clouds, and snow and ice covering the trees and plants is truly a human landscape. From January to February, the camellia flowers bloom white like countless snowflakes. From March to April, Tả Liên Sơn becomes the capital of rhododendrons. The whole mountain forest is immersed in white, yellow, red, purple, pink… You can choose the time depending on your preferences.
How to go to Ta Lien Son
From Hanoi to the Mountain foot
If you are traveling from Hanoi, you will need to go through two stages to reach themountain range. You can choose to travel by bus or motorbike.
Stage 1: Hanoi to Ta Leng commune
First, you will need to travel from Hanoi to Ta Leng commune in Tam Duong district. We will move to Lai Chau by BUS. The bus will take you directly to Ta Leng commune. There are many motorbike rental places in Ta Leng commune.
Stage 2: Ta Leng commune to Ta Lien Son mountain
After arriving in Ta Leng commune, you will need to travel an additional 10km to reach the foot of mountain. Please note that this 10km stretch of road is very difficult to travel on. It is narrow, winding, and has a steep slope.
The trekking route of Ta Lien Son
Day 0: Hanoi – Lai Châu
22:00: Take a sleeper bus to Lai Châu
Day 1 Lai Chau – Ta Leng – Shelter
09:30: Arrive at the trekking point and leave your luggage with the porters. The trek begins.
12:00: Stop for a break and lunch.
17:30: Arrive at the shelter and rest after the first day’s trek.
18:30: Enjoy dinner and socialize with the other members of the group. Then, enjoy the evening in the peaceful atmosphere of the mountains. Spend the night in a shelter with blankets and an insulated mat to keep you warm.
Day 2: Shelter-Ta Lien Son peak – Sapa – Hanoi
05:00: Wake up, have breakfast, and enjoy a hot cup of coffee or ginger tea.
05:30: Warm up and start the final leg of the journey to the summit.
08:00: Reach the summit of Ta Lien, rest, take photos, and enjoy the scenery from the top of the mountain.
10:00: Return to the shelter, pack up your personal belongings, and return to the starting point.
12:00: Have lunch on the way down the mountain.
14:30: Take a motorbike taxi to the starting point, then take a car back to Sa Pa.
17:00: Take a bath in Red Dao herbal leaves and soak in a hot tub to relax after a long journey.
19:00: Have dinner and enjoy a hot pot of sturgeon fish with a variety of fresh vegetables. Raise a glass of sweet apple cider to celebrate your success.
23:00: Take a sleeper bus back to Hanoi.
04:30 the next morning, arrive at the original meeting point.
